Expected Scams in 2026

Dear Clients,

As 2026 begins, scammers are not slowing down. While traditional scams such as SMS phishing, fake links, and investment fraud will continue, a rapidly growing trend is AI-based scams.

Criminals are now using AI to create:

  • Convincing messages with flawless grammar and professional style
  • Deepfake photos and videos to impersonate institutions or well-known individuals
  • Automated chatbots that appear as real bank, courier, or crypto platform representatives

Even experienced users can easily fall victim, as these messages look legitimate and professional. In some cases, AI is also used to simulate “investment opportunities” with high, “guaranteed” returns, often leading to Ponzi or pyramid schemes.

Expected trends in 2026:

  1. Increase in AI-powered phishing and smishing messages in the Balkans and beyond.
  2. More sophisticated crypto and investment scams promising high returns.
  3. Internationally organized groups targeting multiple countries using advanced digital manipulation tools.

How to protect yourself:

  • Never share personal information or passwords through unexpected messages or links.
  • Verify any request directly with official institutions.
  • Be skeptical of “too good to be true” offers or guaranteed returns.
  • Maintain digital hygiene: regularly change passwords and use two-factor authentication.

Scams in 2026 will not wait – speed, carelessness, and trust are tools for fraudsters. Knowledge and caution remain your best protection.

Kind regards,
