Allied Capital Trade Newsletter No. 155
Dear Clients,
This week, we would like to draw your attention to an issue that is particularly relevant to individuals who have already been victims of investment fraud schemes such as Allied Capital Trade.
Unfortunately, the loss of funds does not necessarily mark the end of the fraud. Victims of investment scams may be contacted again months or even years later, this time with an entirely different story.
The most common claim is that the previously lost funds have been “located”, “frozen” or “recovered”, and that only a final procedure needs to be completed before the money can be released.
Why can these contacts appear convincing?
The person contacting you may already know that you invested through a particular platform. They may know the name of the platform, the approximate amount invested, the name of the person you previously communicated with, your telephone number, email address or other information relating to your previous investment.
For this reason, the communication may appear to come from someone who genuinely has access to information about the case.
However, the fact that someone possesses information about your previous investment does not prove that they have located your funds or that they are authorised to recover them.
What does a secondary fraud attempt usually look like?
You may be contacted by someone claiming to be a lawyer, a representative of a regulatory or governmental authority, a blockchain investigator, a financial specialist or an employee of a company specialising in asset recovery.
After the initial contact, you may be told that your funds have been located but that a payment is required before they can be released.
The stated reasons may vary – taxes, administrative fees, transfer costs, cryptocurrency “unlocking” fees, AML or KYC verification costs, blockchain fees or other alleged expenses.
Victims may also receive documents that appear official at first glance, including confirmations of recovered funds, cryptocurrency transaction reports, correspondence supposedly issued by public authorities or documents containing the logos of banks, regulators or other organisations.
However, the professional appearance of a document does not, by itself, confirm that it is genuine.
Particular caution is required when access to your computer or accounts is requested
You should never allow someone who contacts you in this manner to access your computer or mobile phone through remote-access software, nor should you provide access credentials for online banking or cryptocurrency wallets.
In particular, you should never disclose a seed phrase, private key or any other information that could provide control over a cryptocurrency wallet.
You should also avoid making additional payments simply because you have been told that this is the final step required to recover funds that you previously lost.
What should you do if someone contacts you regarding Allied Capital Trade?
If you are contacted by a person or company claiming to have information about your Allied Capital Trade investment, claiming that your funds have been located or offering to assist you in recovering them, we recommend that you do not make any payment before verifying who is contacting you and the basis of their claim.
Please preserve emails, messages, telephone numbers, documents, payment instructions and any other information you receive.
You may also forward such communication to us so that we can review it in the context of the documentation we already hold regarding the case.
Unfortunately, the fact that you have previously been a victim of investment fraud may make you a target for individuals attempting to exploit your understandable wish to recover your lost funds.
For this reason, any unexpected offer to recover your money should be carefully verified before you take any further action.
Thank you for your continued trust.
Kind regards,
Attorney Zoran Miljaković
