Scammers caused record losses in the cryptocurrency world last year, with damages reaching an astounding $5.6 billion, according to the latest FBI report. This represents a 45% increase from 2022, highlighting a troubling rise in fraudulent activities in this sector.
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) recorded nearly 69,500 complaints from users in the U.S. and around the world last year. While cryptocurrency-related complaints accounted for only 10% of the total number of financial fraud complaints, they represented almost half of all reported losses.
The majority of these losses were due to investment scams, commonly referred to as “pig butchering” scams. These schemes involve fake investment platforms promising high returns with minimal risk, often with scammers posing as friends or romantic partners to convince victims to invest increasing amounts of money into fraudulent crypto projects.
According to the report, the bulk of the losses stemmed from scams involving false promises of significant returns, with fraudsters employing sophisticated methods to hide their true intentions. Cryptocurrencies, with their relative novelty and complexity, provide an ideal opportunity for criminals to exploit unsuspecting investors.
This dramatic increase in scams underscores the need for greater caution and education for consumers regarding the risks of crypto investments. The FBI advises investors to be particularly wary of unexpected or unrealistic profit opportunities in the cryptocurrency space
