This week, we would like to address a circumstance that frequently arises in cases involving international online investment fraud schemes.

Victims are often surprised to learn that developments relating to the same scheme may occur in different countries at different times. Information may become available in one jurisdiction months or even years before similar developments occur elsewhere.

In large cross-border cases, investigations are often conducted by different authorities operating under different legal systems, procedural rules, and evidentiary requirements. As a result, the pace at which information is collected, analyzed, and acted upon may vary significantly from one country to another.

It is therefore not unusual for victims to encounter reports, court filings, regulatory actions, or other developments originating from foreign jurisdictions that appear to relate to the same underlying scheme.

In practice, information obtained in one country may eventually assist investigations in another. However, the process of sharing, reviewing, and evaluating such information can take considerable time, particularly in cases involving multiple jurisdictions and large numbers of affected individuals.

For this reason, developments occurring abroad do not necessarily mean that parallel proceedings elsewhere have reached the same stage. Different authorities may be addressing different aspects of the same overall operation based on the information available to them and the legal framework within which they are acting.

Experience shows that large international fraud investigations often progress through a series of developments occurring across different countries over an extended period of time, rather than through a single coordinated action.

We therefore encourage victims to continue preserving all relevant documentation and information, regardless of when particular developments occur in specific jurisdictions.
