Cybercrime Zapadni Balkan Newsletter No. 42
Dear Clients,
In recent years, internet scammers have become more resourceful, and the number of scams significantly increased in 2024. Unfortunately, victims are often unaware that they’ve fallen into a scam until it’s too late. In 2025, certain types of online scams are expected to dominate, and we want to keep you informed so you can stay protected.
- Scams with Fake Identities
One of the most common scams, which continues to thrive, involves scammers pretending to be close relatives (family members, friends) or representatives of banks and other institutions. These scammers use messages, phone calls, or emails to gain the victim’s trust and then ask for personal information or bank account details. This scam is especially prevalent during the holiday season when we are more relaxed and less cautious. Be careful and verify any suspicious contact before sharing any information.
- Cryptocurrency Scams
Given the record highs of Bitcoin’s value at the end of 2024, experts predict that its value will continue to rise, and so will the number of cryptocurrency scams. Scammers often offer “quick and easy” profits through fake brokerage platforms, promising unrealistic returns with minimal investments. The scheme is simple: once you invest in a cryptocurrency that grabs your attention, the scammers sell their shares at a high price, and you’re left with significant losses when the market suddenly crashes. If you plan to invest in cryptocurrencies, always rely on trusted platforms and avoid offers that seem too good to be true.
- Fake Tickets for Major Events
There’s nothing better than enjoying concerts from your favorite performers, but this is an opportunity scammers take advantage of. In 2025, expect scammers to offer fake tickets for popular music events. To avoid losing money, use only verified websites for ticket purchases, as well as the official sites of performers. Never buy tickets from unknown portals or social media, as you may end up without both tickets and money.
